  31. While I understand that if Newtek intends for Java 
  32. to be a replacement for Rexx/BML, this would hurt 
  33. you severely (and it certainly would), from a 
  34. business standpoint, I can certainly understand 
  35. their decision. I think that most of the other 
  36. people here would agree (if not, speak up...). From 
  37. what I've seen of BML, it is pretty impressive, but 
  38. it is not a "standard" that they could tie their 
  39. product to. How many BML programmers are out there?
  40. How many _non-Lightwave_ BML programmers are out 
  41. there (none). For better or for worse, companies 
  42. need to settle upon standards which will benefit 
  43. themselves and their user base. Any plugin 
  44. developer needs to realize that they may have a 
  45. very narrow window of opportunity to release & make 
  46. money from a product if the feature that product 
  47. provides is worthy of inclusion in main package.
  48. For example, if plugins had come before bones, and 
  49. someone had created a bones plugin, would you 
  50. really hold it against Newtek if they included such 
  51. features in an upgrade? As one who uses LW to 
  52. support myself (wife & daughter too for that 
  53. matter), I am all for the inclusion of features 
  54. which will enable me to do so. Plugins are a great 
  55. addition to Lightwave, but cannot hope to provide 
  56. the punch of a built in feature. For an example of 
  57. this, look at REXX itself. When CBM added it to the 
  58. Amiga OS, _every_ serious package added an AREXX 
  59. port (what a wonderfull world it was too...). On 
  60. the flip side, REXX is available as an add on 
  61. package to Windows, but how many applications on 
  62. the PC sport a REXX port? Again, the answer is few 
  63. to none... There are many more examples of this 
  64. that I could come up with, but you get the point. 
  65. All plugin developers take an honest look at what 
  66. they feel their window of opportunity for profit 
  67. will be. This is just good business sense...
